What Home Energy Scotland Funds
Here’s exactly what Home Energy Scotland covers, and how much you could receive. All figures are subject to eligibility check. Figures verified August 2026.
Air source heat pumps – grant of £7,500, with an interest-free loan of up to £7,500. The heat pump must provide 100% of your heating and hot water. Hybrid heat pumps are not eligible. If you’re replacing an existing heat pump, the grant doesn’t apply, but the interest-free loan is still available.
High heat retention storage heaters – grant of £2,500, with a loan of up to £5,500. These are available where a heat pump isn’t suitable for the property. An MCS-certified installer confirms this, or an EPC showing you live in a flat.
Solid wall insulation (internal or external) – grant of £7,500, with a loan of up to £2,500.
Flat roof and room-in-roof insulation – grant of £3,000, with a loan of up to £1,000.
Loft, cavity and underfloor insulation – grant of £1,500, with a loan of up to £500.
Energy-efficiency grants (insulation measures) cover up to 75% of the combined cost, capped at £7,500. An EPC is required for all energy-efficiency measures. It’s not required for heat pumps.
Rural and island uplift: if your property is in a rural area, an additional £1,500 applies to both heating and energy-efficiency grants. Rural households can claim up to £18,000 in total grant funding.
Funding is first-come, first-served and subject to availability. Agreements run for nine months. Interest-free loans carry a 1.5% admin fee, capped at £150.
A note on boiler grants. If you’ve searched for a boiler grant, here’s the honest answer. Home Energy Scotland does not fund replacing a gas boiler with another gas boiler. The grant covers switching to an air source heat pump, and at £7,500 it covers a significant portion of the cost. If your gas boiler needs replacing, a like-for-like swap is a private purchase, but switching to a heat pump with HES funding is worth looking at.
